About the Play
To The West is a feminist Viking adventure piece written for younger audiences. The story takes place over the Festival of Walpurgis – a nine day celebration of Odin’s wisdom. Our clan has recently lost its leader, Jarl Ivar, and Jarl Torsten is struggling to find his footing leading the Vikings. Over the nine days, four major stories unfold. Halvard, now of age, must choose between pleasing the clan as a warrior or following his father as a rune carver. Eirik, a young and strong warrior, and Dagmar, recent widow of Jarl Ivar, face off to replace Torsten as raid leader of the clan. Sif and Inger, young thralls who have been slaves their whole lives, realize this is the perfect week to make their escape from the clan. And Kari’s dreams of being a raiding warrior are dashed when Torsten instead announces her marriage to another clan member. She has only the length of the festival to find a way to secure her freedom, and prove herself as a warrior.
